Having never actually seen Macross Plus before (except in ads from Macross 7 tapes) I was sitting down to watch these discs with high expectations. Fortunately, Manga came through and met those expectations with this great release.



Audio quality is very good. The actual audio itself sounded superb, you can hear everything that's going on in crystal clarity. The only reason I gave this a B+ was because they didn't include a Japanese 5.1 track. I had heard good things about the dubbing of this series, but the only two good voice actors I thought were Isamu and Guld, and possibly the designer of the VF19, who I've heard in other Anime bailey button ugg boots dubs as well. Everyone else's delivery seemed stale and like they were reading off a script (which is exactly how you don't want it to sound!). Most of the characters (especially the head honcho of the SuperNova project) spent a lot of time enunciating every single syllable, making it sound really unnatural. Aside made great use of the LFE channel and you can feel the humm of every rocket firing, the thump of every punch landing, and the shockwave of every explosion.



Video quality is excellent, and my only real complaint was that they encoded this in interlaced uggs uk format. I really wish DVD producers would encode discs in progressive (refreshing every pixel each frame, as opposed to interlaced) so that people with computer DVD players don't have to see the obvious interlacing flicker. Some discs I have (like Tenchi the Movie 2) switch between progressive and interlaced, using the former for very complicated and motionfilled scenes while using the latter for less actionoriented scenes like dialog. This, I feel, is an excellent middle ground since one doesn't really need the full frame when the only action on screen is a character's mouth moving, but you can still avoid that damn flicker during big battle scenes and such.



Oh, and one other thing they have white subtitles. Why can't all companies just settle on using the yellow with black border font? It's so much easier to read than the white in some scenes.



I liked the incidental music and the score in the background, especially during the fight scene at the end of Part 2. Unfortunately, the ending song doesn't have subtitles! Why? Would that have been so difficult to do?



The menus are very nice, much more active than the majority of Anime DVDs. The disc boots up to the beginning of Sharon Apple's concert and then her music plays in the background while you navigate the animated menus. Fortunately, the disc suffers no slowdown when moving the cursor, a definite plus.



The show itself was great, I really loved the animation in it and the storyline so far is very involving, and I can't wait to finish writing this review and watching the next disc! ^_^
